Nicholas Bagget Jr.
Nicholas Bagget Jr was our first born American progenitor. He was born in ca 1695 in Isle of Wight County , Virginia . He died in Bertie County , North Carolina in 1755. His wife was Mary Hardy.
He was an original land owner in North Carolina and he is said to have helped settle Eastern North Carolina . He is mentioned as such in “State & Colonial Records of North Carolina,” Vol IV, page 766 & 1126, 1734-1752” by William L. Saunders.
The following will was found in Bertie County , North Carolina :
In the name of God Amen, I Nicholas Bagget of Bertie County in the Province of North Carolina , being of perfect mind and memory do make and ordain this my last will and testament.
Principally and first of all, I give and recommend my soul into the hands of God that gave it, and as touching such worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me with in this life, I give and dispose of the same in the following manner and form.
Item, I give and bequeath unto my well beloved son Benjamin Baggett, four pounds Virginia currency to be raised and levied out of my estate and to be paid to him in clothing and other necessarys as he shall have occasion, at the discretion of my executors.
Item, I give and bequeath unto my son Nicholas Bagget one shilling sterling to be levied out of my estate, it being all that I intend to give him in this my last will and testament, or all that he shall have out of my estate.
Item, I give and bequeath unto my son Abraham Baggett one shilling sterling to be levied out of my estate, it being all that I intend to give him in this my last will and testament, or all that he shall have out of my estate.
Item, I give and bequeath unto my son Joseph Bagget two cows and calves by him freely to be possessed.
Item, I give and bequeath unto my son Barnabey Baggett one cow and calf by him freely to be possessed.
Item, I give and bequeath unto my son Thomas Baggett the Plantation whereon I now live and all of the land belonging to it, and one young mare to him and his
heirs forever.
Item, I give and bequeath unto my son Hardy Baggett one cow and calf and one musket gun.
Item, I give and bequeath unto my daughter Mary West one shilling sterling it being all that I intend to give her in this my last will and testament or all that she shall have out of my estate.
Item, I give and bequeath unto my daughter Martha Baggett two cows and calves it being the same that hath been called her own.
Item, I give and bequeath unto my daughter Elizabeth Wood one shilling sterling it being all that I intend to give her in this my last will and testament or all that she shall have out of my estate.
Item, I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Mary Baggett, all of my moveable estate that is not given out in legacies to my children and the right and privileges of my houses, land and Plantation whereon I now live, during the time of her natural life and after to my son Thomas Baggett, to him and his heirs forever.
I likewise constitute, make and ordain my sons Joseph and Thomas Bagget sole and lawful executors of this my last will and testament and I do hereby utterly disallow and disannul all the every other will and testament by me before made, ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last will and testament.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 9 th day of January in the year of our Lord Christ 1753 and in the 26 th year of our Sovereign King George the Second, Defender of the Faith.
